The Black Press

A collection of 24 digitized images of African American publications (magazines, journals, newspapers) from the early-to-mid twentieth century to highlight, contextualize, and commemorate the political and creative significance of these resources and how they altogether served as a counter-endeavor to the past dehumanizing strategy of forced illiteracy from the period of enslavement in the United States, a space to highlight the unique and singular creative expressions of African Americans, and an earnest pursuit to speak to new generations of African Americans, (and all interested parties beyond the African American community) across class stratification whose political consciousness was increasing as civil liberties were continually challenged by oppressive socio-political structures.
